What gear should an automatic car be parked in?

Automatic cars should be parked in P gear. After the car enters the parking position, follow these steps: press the brake pedal, shift to N gear, engage the handbrake, release the foot brake, turn off the engine, then shift to P gear and remove the key. Automatic transmissions have two gears for parking: P gear and N gear. From a transmission structure perspective, both can be used for long-term parking. P gear stands for Park gear - literally meaning it's designed for parking. Its mechanism involves a ratchet and pawl system that locks the transmission components. N gear is Neutral gear - engaging this gear disconnects power output from the transmission, which can also be used for parking, functioning identically to manual transmission's neutral gear.
