What does the 'shaft' in axle mean?

Axis is one of the main components in machinery. Generally a metal round rod, wheels and other rotating parts revolve around it or rotate with it. Introduction to wheelbase: Wheelbase is the horizontal distance between the center lines of axles on a locomotive or vehicle. It is divided into: rigid wheelbase, bogie wheelbase and total wheelbase. Rigid wheelbase refers to the horizontal distance between the center lines of the front and rear axles within the main frame of a frame-type locomotive. Wheelbase should not be too long: To facilitate passing through curves, the rigid wheelbase should not be too long. Bogie wheelbase refers to the distance between the center lines of the two axles at both ends of a bogie. Total wheelbase refers to the horizontal distance between the center lines of the front and rear axles of a locomotive; rigid wheelbase is the distance from the foremost axle to the rearmost axle that remains parallel during train operation. If the rigid wheelbase is too long, it will increase pressure on the tracks when turning, and may even cause derailment.
I used to be quite into cars. The axle is essentially that sturdy metal rod connected to the car's wheels, responsible for driving their rotation. In a vehicle, it acts as an intermediary component that bears weight and transmits power—engine force is transferred through the transmission to the axle, which then drives the wheels. Without it, the car wouldn't move. In regular sedans, axles are made of rigid steel or alloy, thick and robust, while off-road vehicles feature even sturdier axles. I've driven on mountain roads with axle issues, and the car vibrated intensely. Regular maintenance, like frequent bearing lubrication, helps prevent wear. A good axle ensures smooth driving, low noise, and high safety performance, whereas a damaged one requires costly repairs. During routine tire pressure checks, tap the axle and listen for unusual sounds to confirm no cracks. Proper maintenance can extend its lifespan to eight or nine years.
