What does the P on a sedan mean?

The P on a sedan, if it is enclosed in parentheses with a circle in the middle, is an indicator for the parking brake, used to show whether the parking brake (handbrake) is engaged. When the parking brake is pulled up, the indicator light turns on, and when released, the light turns off. If the P is on the gear shift, it stands for Park, which is used when the car is parked and not in use. Engaging this gear locks the wheels mechanically to prevent rolling. The R on a car stands for Reverse gear; the N stands for Neutral, used when temporarily stopping (e.g., at a red light), and to prevent the car from rolling on a slope, the brake must be pressed. The D stands for Drive, also known as the driving gear.
