What does the odoff light mean?

odoff light indicates that the overdrive gear of the car is turned off. od stands for overdrive. When the gear lever is in the "D" position and the od switch is set to "on", the transmission can shift up to 4th gear. When the od switch is set to "off", the transmission can only shift up to 3rd gear at most, meaning 4th gear is restricted. When odoff is displayed, even if you accelerate above 60 km/h, the car will not shift to 4th gear but will continue accelerating by increasing the engine speed in 3rd gear, thus increasing fuel consumption. Turning off the od gear is mainly used for high-speed overtaking, as 3rd gear provides greater torque than 4th gear, allowing for faster acceleration. Normally, it is not needed during regular driving.
When dealing with transmission system issues, I often encounter car owners inquiring about the O/D OFF light. This light indicates that the overdrive function of an automatic transmission vehicle is turned off, meaning the transmission is forced to operate in lower gears. Usually, this happens because you accidentally pressed the overdrive control button on the gear lever, and some models may also restrict the gear to D3 or D2. Keeping the overdrive off can indeed enhance power response during low-speed city driving or uphill climbs, but driving on the highway with the light on for a long time can lead to higher engine RPM, increased fuel consumption, and possibly abnormal rises in transmission fluid temperature. If the light is on but the gear shifts feel normal, it might be due to poor button contact or aging signal wiring. In such cases, it's recommended to first use the onboard diagnostic system to check if there are any stored transmission fault codes.
