Mercedes-Benz fault code P012800 indicates that the Engine Coolant Temperature (ECT) is below the thermostat regulating temperature. Possible causes of this fault: The vehicle's thermostat is equipped with a ball valve to control the volumetric flow rate of the coolant. Fault code P012800 may be caused by a stuck ball valve. Solution: Replace the thermostat: The thermostat is mostly located on the right side of the engine, connected to the radiator lower hose; removing the air filter box allows clear visibility of the thermostat assembly. Before removing the thermostat, first detach the hose clamp and pull out the hose; remove the thermostat core, clean the interface thoroughly, and install a new thermostat core. If the thermostat aluminum housing gasket is aged, it must also be replaced.
