What does the gear D mean?

Gear D is the drive gear in automatic transmission vehicles. When the gear shift lever is placed in D position, the hydraulic control system will automatically engage the corresponding forward gear circuit based on throttle opening signal and vehicle speed signal. The planetary gear transmission system, dual-clutch transmission system, or continuously variable transmission belt system will obtain corresponding gear ratios under the control of actuators. Another common gear in automatic transmission vehicles is P gear, which stands for parking gear. After engaging P gear, the vehicle's transmission operates in neutral, completely interrupting power transmission between the engine and output shaft. Drivers don't need to turn off the running engine during brief waiting periods, and even for long-term parking, drivers may choose not to engage the handbrake.
