What does the ECO display mean on the Beijing Hyundai Mistra?

The ECO display indicates that the vehicle's economical driving mode is activated. ECO is an English abbreviation derived from Ecology (environmental protection), Conservation (energy saving), and Optimization (power). The Eco mode is further divided into active eco driving mode and non-active eco driving mode. Eco mode is categorized into active and non-active types. The difference lies in the fact that the active type has a dedicated button, allowing the driver to choose whether to activate it. When the driver presses the Eco mode switch, the dashboard indicator light will illuminate, and the vehicle will automatically adjust settings such as throttle opening, transmission shift logic, and air conditioning output power. Non-active Eco mode does not have a dedicated button. When the dashboard Eco indicator light comes on, it serves only as a reminder function. The Eco system automatically evaluates your driving behavior. If your current driving operation achieves the optimal fuel supply, the dashboard will simultaneously display the Eco indicator light. Most vehicles use the active Eco driving mode, which means they have a dedicated switch button. You can activate Eco mode during daily driving, except when the speed exceeds 120 km/h, during idle parking, in N/P gear, or in manual mode, especially when climbing hills. In these situations, activating Eco mode may not only fail to demonstrate its fuel-saving characteristics but also affect the vehicle's power. Additionally, Eco mode typically becomes ineffective under the following conditions: When the vehicle speed exceeds 120 km/h, the system prioritizes speed, and Eco mode automatically deactivates. During idle parking or in N/P gear or manual mode, Eco mode may also become ineffective. When high torque output is required, such as when climbing a hill, the engine control unit will prioritize ensuring sufficient power to drive the vehicle, and Eco mode will not function.
When my Mistra displays ECO, it means the car has entered the economy driving mode. This mode automatically activates when you press the accelerator gently or maintain a steady speed, aiming to optimize engine performance and transmission shift points to save fuel. In daily driving, this reduces fuel consumption, especially in congested urban traffic. I can feel smoother acceleration but less aggressive, which can save a lot on fuel costs in the long run and is more environmentally friendly. However, if the ECO light is not on, it doesn’t mean there’s a problem—it just means the system hasn’t triggered the energy-saving settings. I recommend maintaining a light throttle habit to keep ECO on, which is much more efficient than hard acceleration and can also extend engine life. Remember, ECO doesn’t affect basic performance needs—it just makes driving smarter.
