What does the Besturn P0983 fault code mean?

Besturn P0983 fault code means the shift solenoid valve D control circuit is high. Principle of shift solenoid valve: The shift solenoid valve controls the hydraulic pressure to the transmission clutch by opening or closing the transmission fluid control valve to control its separation and engagement, thereby achieving gear shifting. The causes of this fault code include transmission fluid level being too low, transmission fluid being too dirty, mechanical failure of the shift solenoid valve, circuit, connector, or transmission control module (TCM) failure, etc. Introduction to solenoid valves: Solenoid valves (Electromagnetic valve) are industrial equipment controlled by electromagnets, used as basic automation components to control fluids, belonging to actuators, and not limited to hydraulic and pneumatic applications. They are used in industrial control systems to adjust the direction, flow, speed, and other parameters of the medium. Solenoid valves can work with different circuits to achieve the desired control, ensuring both precision and flexibility. There are many types of solenoid valves, with different valves playing roles in different parts of the control system. The most commonly used are check valves, safety valves, directional control valves, and speed control valves.
My Besturn previously displayed the P0983 trouble code. After checking the data, I found it was an issue with the hydraulic sensor inside the transmission. This sensor controls the oil pressure during gear shifts, and the error indicated it detected abnormally high voltage. There could be several reasons, such as water entering the sensor connector, the wiring harness being worn out causing a short circuit, or the sensor itself aging. At that time, my car showed obvious symptoms, with jerky gear shifts during acceleration, as if being pulled back. At the repair shop, the diagnostic tool confirmed that the sensor signal was indeed fluctuating high. After replacing the sensor, everything returned to normal. I suggest not delaying such issues, as transmission repairs can easily cost tens of thousands. Addressing it early can save you some money.
