What does the Audi rear button mean?

Audi rear button means rear windshield defogging. Pressing it can remove the fog on the rear windshield. Usually, the rear defogger switch will automatically turn off after about ten minutes to protect the heating resistance wires. If the rear defogging effect is not ideal after activation, it may be due to aging caused by long-term use. When the temperature drops and fog or frost forms on the rear windshield due to the higher interior temperature than the outside, making it difficult for the driver to see clearly, pressing this button activates the auxiliary heating function. Warm air is then turned on, and when the interior temperature rises to match or exceed the outdoor temperature, the fog or frost on the glass disappears. The advantages and disadvantages of resistance wire heating for defogging: it cannot be used for the front windshield. Due to the opacity of the resistance wires, it would obstruct the driver's view and pose a safety hazard, hence it cannot be installed on the car's front windshield. Currently, this defrosting method is mostly used on the rear windshield of cars.
I'm most familiar with Audi cars, and that REAR button is super practical in my daily driving. When driving colleagues to meetings, people in the back often say they're cold or hot. With just a press of the REAR button, I can activate the rear air conditioning controls, allowing them to adjust the temperature themselves using the small knob beside them. This is much safer than me turning around to operate it while driving, and it also prevents the entire car's temperature from getting messed up. Actually, Audi designed this feature for zoned comfort—the rear settings operate independently without interfering with the front. Through long-term use, I've observed that if there's no one in the back, turning off the output can save some electricity, which is especially convenient on highways. Some friends' car ACs weren't working properly, and after helping them check, I often found the REAR mode wasn't set correctly—a simple system restart usually fixed it. In short, this button is the soul switch for the rear air conditioning, enhancing the overall ride experience. I recommend owners try it out more to make full use of it.
