What does the ABS warning light mean?

Car ABS warning light may be triggered by the following reasons: Reason 1: The sensing part of the ABS speed sensor is covered by mud, sludge, or other contaminants, which affects the sensor's ability to detect the corresponding speed signal. As a result, the ABS computer cannot determine the vehicle speed or the wheel slip rate, and thus cannot issue appropriate commands to adjust braking. How to handle: Clean the dirt on the speed sensor and adjust the gap between the speed sensor and the signal ring to restore normal function. Reason 2: Poor signal quality due to loose connections between system lines or poor contact of the ABS relay can cause system failure. The most common issue is a loose connection of the speed sensor wire plug, which will also show a speed sensor signal error in the ABS computer's fault memory. How to handle: Check the line connections and reconnect any loose parts.
A few days ago while driving on the highway, the ABS light suddenly illuminated on my dashboard, which gave me quite a scare. This warning light indicates an issue with the Anti-lock Braking System. The ABS prevents wheel lock-up during hard braking through wheel speed sensors and a computer module. The alert could be triggered by dirt on the sensors, a blown fuse, or poor wiring contact. Dirty sensors are the most common cause, especially after rainy days when mud splashed by the wheels can block the sensor heads. It could also be due to a faulty hydraulic pump or control module malfunction. Once the warning light comes on, normal braking still works, but the anti-lock function is lost during hard braking, making the car prone to skidding and losing control, which is quite dangerous. I immediately pulled over to a safe spot, checked around the tires for any debris, and tried restarting the engine to see if the light would turn off. When it didn't, I went to a repair shop where the mechanic used a diagnostic tool and found a broken sensor wire. My advice is not to wait if you encounter this issue—quickly inspect simple components or go straight to a professional for help.
