What does RES mean on a car?

RES on a car stands for Resume in the cruise control system, which restores the preset speed. Function of RES: Used for acceleration after setting cruise control; press RES to restore the previously set speed after temporarily canceling cruise control. Purpose of cruise control: The driver selects the speed based on road conditions and activates the cruise control system via a toggle switch to replace throttle pedal control. The system automatically adjusts fuel supply according to the impact of slopes and road conditions on speed, enabling the vehicle to maintain a constant speed automatically. Using cruise control allows the driver to avoid controlling the throttle pedal during long highway drives, reducing fatigue and unnecessary speed fluctuations, thereby saving fuel. How cruise control works: The cruise control system operates by comparing the pulse signal from the vehicle speed sensor with the preset speed via the cruise control module, then issuing commands to mechanically adjust the throttle opening via a servo, increasing or decreasing it to maintain the set speed.
Last time I went on a long trip, I noticed this button. The RES button in a car usually stands for the resume function in the cruise control system. Normally, after setting the speed, say at 100 kilometers per hour, if you need to brake to slow down because of a car ahead, the cruise control automatically cancels. Pressing the RES button at this point will make the car accelerate back to the previously set speed of 100 km/h without needing to manually adjust it again. On highways with frequent speed changes, this feature is quite convenient, saving you from having to press the set button each time. However, it's important to check the surrounding traffic conditions before resuming, as blindly pressing it in heavy traffic can be dangerous. The acceleration when resuming speed isn't too aggressive, but it's still quicker than human reaction.
