What does 'Please check the fuel filler cap' mean?

Please check if the fuel filler cap issue is caused by a faulty fuel cap sensor or a broken pull cord. Symptoms of a damaged fuel cap sensor: The car's fuel gauge fluctuates irregularly; the fuel gauge suddenly drops to zero; the fuel gauge reading rises unexpectedly. The fuel level sensor detects the position (height) of fuel in the container by measuring the change in capacitance between the sensor housing and the sensing electrode caused by the fuel, converting this change into a current variation. Broken fuel cap pull cord: When the fuel cap pull cord breaks, it prevents the fuel cap from opening normally. The method to open the fuel tank is as follows: use a small flat-head screwdriver, insert it into the middle rear side of the fuel cap, then slowly turn the screwdriver to the right. This will bend the metal latch inside the fuel cap, allowing it to open. Remember to visit a proper repair shop to replace the pull cord after opening.
Recently, the 'Check Fuel Cap' warning light appeared on my car. After researching, I learned this is typically an alert from the vehicle's evaporative emission control system. Simply put, when the fuel cap isn't tightened properly, is loose, or the seal is worn out, fuel vapors can leak, triggering the system to detect an anomaly. If not addressed promptly, it may cause the engine malfunction light to illuminate as well, affecting fuel efficiency and increasing environmental pollution. My advice is to first stop and turn off the engine, then re-tighten the cap until it clicks into place securely. After that, take a short drive to see if the light turns off. If it persists, the cap might be damaged or there could be deeper issues like faults in fuel pump-related components. In that case, head to a professional repair shop immediately to avoid wasting fuel and causing further damage to the vehicle.
