What Does Mid-Engine Mean?
1 Answers
Mid-engine refers to the placement of the engine in the middle of the car body, with the center of gravity located between the front and rear axles. Specifically, it is positioned behind the driver and front passenger seats and in front of the rear axle. Front mid-engine cars are relatively rare, but examples include the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG and AMG GTR, both of which feature a front mid-engine layout. Whether the engine is front mid-mounted or mid-rear-mounted, both configurations help balance the weight distribution between the front and rear of the car, thereby improving handling and performance. If the front of the car is too heavy, it can lead to understeer during fast cornering; conversely, if the rear is too heavy, it can result in oversteer during fast cornering.
