What does it mean when the oil can light turns red?

The red oil can warning light indicates low oil pressure, signaling a severe shortage of engine oil. Continuing to drive in this condition may cause damage to the vehicle. Therefore, when the oil can light on the dashboard turns red, it is crucial to stop the vehicle immediately and wait for assistance. There are several reasons why the engine oil warning light may illuminate: 1. Excessive oil viscosity: Oil viscosity is closely related to oil quality. Higher viscosity provides better high-temperature resistance, and vice versa. 2. Clogged or improperly adjusted pressure relief valve: A faulty pressure relief valve can cause abnormal oil pressure, triggering the warning light. 3. Insufficient oil level: Low oil quantity reduces the oil pump's output or causes air ingestion, leading to pressure drops and accelerated wear of crankshaft bearings, cylinder liners, and pistons due to poor lubrication. 4. Engine overheating: Excessive scale in the cooling system, poor heat dissipation, prolonged overload operation, or delayed fuel injection timing can all cause engine overheating. This accelerates oil aging, deterioration, and thinning, resulting in leaks through clearances, pressure drops, and warning light activation. 5. Oil bypass valve malfunction: The bypass valve maintains proper main oil gallery pressure. If its pressure-regulating spring weakens, adjustments are incorrect, or the valve seat/ball interface wears or sticks, oil pressure will decrease. 6. Clogged oil filter: When the filter becomes blocked, the bypass valve in its base opens, allowing unfiltered oil into the main gallery. Incorrect bypass valve opening pressure settings (either too high or too low) will cause oil pump pressure fluctuations, triggering the warning light.
