What does it mean when the ESP light is on?

When the ESP light is on, it indicates that there is an issue with the vehicle's Electronic Stability Program (ESP). This could be due to the driver accidentally pressing the ESP off button, causing the light to illuminate. If the light is on because of an unintentional button press, there is no need to worry as it simply indicates that the ESP system has been turned off. Another reason could be that the ESP system is actively working. For instance, when driving on snowy or slippery roads, the ESP system automatically engages, and the indicator light will turn on during its operation. The light is not meant to stay on continuously. Additionally, the light may come on if there is a malfunction with the vehicle's wheel speed sensors. The ESP system is part of the active safety features and is normally enabled by default. For driving safety, it is advised not to turn off the ESP system.
A few days ago, the ESP light suddenly came on while I was driving, which really startled me. That's the Electronic Stability Program indicator light, which normally illuminates briefly during vehicle startup for self-check. But if it stays on continuously, there might be an issue. Possible causes include dirt on the wheel speed sensors or wheel slippage triggering the system, especially during rainy or snowy conditions when roads are slippery. I remember last time my car had this problem - it turned out to be a loose wheel speed sensor on the left rear wheel. If the light remains on, it's advisable to pull over and check tire pressure and tread wear. If everything appears normal, you should promptly visit a professional repair shop for diagnostic equipment testing. Otherwise, it could lead to accidents during sharp turns and compromise driving safety.
