What does it mean when the engine warning light is on and can I still drive?

When the engine warning light is on, it indicates the car's computer is performing a self-check. You can still drive. The function of the engine is: to convert the thermal energy of gasoline or diesel into mechanical energy by burning the fuel in a sealed cylinder, causing the gas to expand and push the pistons to perform work. The engine consists of: the engine block, crankshaft and connecting rod mechanism, valve train and intake/exhaust system, fuel supply system and governor, starting device, cooling system, and lubrication system. Methods for engine maintenance include: 1. Regularly change the engine oil and oil filter; 2. Use lubricating oil of the appropriate quality grade; 3. Regularly clean the radiator; 4. Regularly clean the air filter, oil filter, and fuel filter; 5. Maintain good ventilation in the crankcase and clean it regularly; 6. Regularly clean the fuel system.
I remember last year, not long after I bought my car, this warning light came on and gave me quite a scare. When that little yellow light started flashing, I panicked and immediately pulled over. After checking some materials, I learned that this light usually indicates potential issues with the engine or emission system, such as an oxygen sensor malfunction, fuel system leak, or catalytic converter problem. Whether you can continue driving depends on the situation. If the car still runs normally without shaking or unusual noises, you might be able to drive slowly a short distance to a repair shop. However, if the car behaves noticeably off, like lacking power or making strange noises, it's best not to drive it and call for a tow truck instead to avoid further damage. At the time, my car seemed to drive fine after the light came on, so I cautiously drove to a nearby 4S shop for inspection. It turned out to be a code error caused by a loose fuel cap, which only cost a few dozen yuan to fix. Still, safety comes first. Next time I encounter this, I'll be even more cautious to avoid prolonged driving that could affect the car's condition or lead to an accident.
