Engine torque refers to the moment of force output from the crankshaft end of the engine. Under the condition of fixed power, it is inversely proportional to the engine speed. The faster the speed, the smaller the torque, and vice versa. Engine torque reflects the load capacity of a car within a certain range. Torque is the force that causes an object to rotate, and the unit of torque is Nm. An engine is a machine that can convert other forms of energy into mechanical energy. It can be used as a power generation device or refer to the entire machine including the power device. Engines can be divided into piston engines, ramjet engines, rocket engines, and turbine engines. The working process includes intake, compression, fuel injection, combustion, expansion, work, and exhaust.
Engine torque is one of the things I pay the most attention to when driving, as it essentially represents the rotational force of the engine's output shaft. Physically speaking, it's like the push and pull exerted by the engine when it's turning, directly enabling the car to accelerate from a standstill, climb hills, or tow heavy loads. Having driven multiple car models, high-torque engines, such as diesel-powered vehicles, are particularly effortless in city stop-and-go traffic or when carrying passengers, with quick acceleration and less likelihood of stalling. In contrast, power indicates the engine's total output capability, but torque is more about the actual driving experience—for instance, the push-back sensation during highway overtaking or uphill driving comes from strong torque. When choosing a new car, I always look at the torque curve; having the peak at lower RPMs is better, as it saves fuel and offers more agility. Some engines enhance low-end torque through turbocharging, and I've found them smoother to drive after testing. Remember, torque is often measured in Newton-meters, and a higher number usually means a more powerful car.
