What Does Engine Misfire Mean?

Engine misfire, also known as engine missing or engine firing failure, refers to a malfunction where one or several cylinders of the engine fail to work or work insufficiently. When an engine misfire occurs, severe shaking, insufficient power, weak acceleration, and increased fuel consumption may occur. If multiple cylinders misfire, the engine may fail to start. The main causes of engine misfire stem from the ignition system and fuel injection system. Severe burning of the contacts in the distributor cap of the ignition system can cause spark jumping, mostly occurring between corresponding terminals on the cap. At idle, the engine speed may fluctuate significantly, and power may drop severely.
