What Does D3 Gear Mean?

D3 gear means the following: 1. D3 gear limits the gear changes to between 1st and 3rd gears, without automatic upshifting. Generally, at speeds below 40 km/h on normal roads, there is no noticeable difference (the shifting program is the same as in D gear). However, when exceeding this speed, instead of upshifting to 4th gear as it normally would, the engine RPM increases. Normally, shifting occurs below 2500 RPM, but in D3 gear, it can maintain above 3000 RPM, making acceleration more responsive at this point. 2. D3 gear is also a driving gear, basically the same as D gear except that it only shifts between the first three forward gears. However, when driving, it is important to pay attention to the maximum speed allowed by the 3rd gear to avoid damaging the engine.
I was also quite confused about the D3 gear when I first started driving, but later I understood that it's a mode in an automatic transmission car, limiting the vehicle to operate only in gears 1 to 3. Normally, when we drive in D gear, it automatically shifts from 1st gear up to 6th or more gears. But when switched to D3, it only works in the lower gears, preventing the engine from shifting to higher gears. This is especially suitable for mountain roads or slopes. For example, when going uphill, the car needs more torque to climb, and D3 can maintain stable power, avoiding frequent gear shifts that cause jerking. When going downhill, it also provides engine braking, allowing the car to slow down more smoothly and reducing brake wear. However, don't use D3 all the time on flat roads, as it will increase fuel consumption. I recommend using it only briefly on steep slopes or mountain roads. Remember, shifting from D to D3 doesn't require stopping the car; just move the gear lever directly. But it's best to check the manual to ensure your car supports this feature, as settings may vary between different models, making it safer and smoother to use.
