rest: Residual heat utilization function of the air conditioning system. 1. It can provide heating for a period of time after the engine is turned off, and then it will automatically shut down. 2. It is a kind of heat preservation for the car. When the vehicle is started again, there is no need to turn on the air conditioning system, just heat the interior temperature. Therefore, turning on the heating in winter is more fuel-efficient than turning on the cooling in summer. Precautions for using air conditioning in winter: (1) The working principle of air conditioning heating in winter is different from cooling in summer. Most of the heating provided by the air conditioning in winter comes from the excess heat generated by the engine, which is blown into the car by the blower. (2) Wait until the engine reaches a good temperature standard, i.e., between 80-90°C, before turning on the air conditioning.

After driving for 15 years, I finally understood this little symbol - REST is actually a function that uses residual engine heat for warmth when parked. Right after turning off the engine while it's still hot, pressing the REST button on the AC panel activates the blower to circulate radiator heat into the cabin. This is such a clever design - returning to a toasty warm car after winter grocery shopping without restarting the engine. Most German cars have this feature, with older VW models placing the button beside the knob while newer versions hide it in the infotainment submenu. It works for about 30 minutes max, but do check if your battery has sufficient charge.

As a car enthusiast, I really appreciate the practicality of the REST design. Essentially, it's a heat recovery system that utilizes the coolant temperature of around 90°C after parking to heat cold air through a heat exchanger. Unlike air conditioning heating which requires compressor activation, this function relies solely on the blower, making it more energy-efficient. It's particularly useful during northern winters when temperatures drop below -10°C – while waiting for half an hour to pick up kids from training classes by the roadside, the cabin temperature can basically be maintained above 15°C. However, it becomes ineffective once the vehicle has completely cooled down, and this feature might not be available in base trim models.

This feature is totally unnecessary in the south, but the REST button becomes indispensable when traveling to Northeast China. Press it when parking in the morning, and you'll return to a warm steering wheel. The principle is simple - the engine coolant retains enough heat to provide warm air for a while, which is much more economical than restarting the engine. Volkswagen's system defaults to 20 minutes, but using external air circulation shortens this duration. The downside? Be cautious with older car batteries - my old vehicle almost failed to start once after using this. While newer electric models have switched to electric heating, this waste heat utilization design in combustion engine cars is genuinely clever.

Every time I drive my colleague's BMW, I play with the REST button featuring the fan logo. The engineer told me this system costs less than 200 yuan, just adding a delay relay and an air valve control module. The best part is it doesn't consume fuel, using residual heat to save about 5% fuel consumption after parking. Last week at minus five degrees in the parking lot, the temperature only dropped 3 degrees within fifteen minutes during testing. But remember to turn on the heater before shutting off the engine, otherwise the pipes will be full of cold air. Now most domestic cars priced above 100,000 yuan are equipped with this feature, though the icon is often overlooked as it's hidden on the third page of the air conditioning menu.

The Difference Between a Panoramic Glass Roof and a Panoramic Sunroof

The differences between a panoramic glass roof and a panoramic sunroof are as follows: Ability to Open: A panoramic glass roof is fixed and cannot be opened, while a panoramic sunroof is larger in area, sometimes even covering the entire roof with a single piece of glass, and can be opened. Ventilation: A panoramic glass roof is no different from a regular roof in terms of ventilation, aside from the material, and does not allow airflow. A panoramic sunroof, however, does. Many panoramic sunroofs today consist of two separate glass panels for the front and rear, allowing both front and rear passengers to enjoy the sunroof experience. Visibility: A panoramic glass roof offers a larger view than most panoramic sunroofs, providing an unobstructed view of the scenery above when seated inside the car. Maintenance Costs: The maintenance cost for a panoramic glass roof is lower than that of a panoramic sunroof. The tracks of a panoramic sunroof may malfunction and require repairs, whereas a panoramic glass roof does not have this issue, resulting in lower maintenance costs.

Should Fully Synthetic Engine Oil Be Changed at 8,000 Kilometers?

Fully synthetic engine oil can be changed at 8,000 kilometers. The replacement interval for fully synthetic engine oil is 10,000 kilometers or one year, so changing it at 8,000 kilometers is perfectly acceptable and considered an early replacement. Here is more information about fully synthetic engine oil: Concept: Fully synthetic engine oil is a high-grade lubricant among engine oils. It is derived from ethylene and propylene, which are dispersed from natural gas or crude oil gas, and then undergoes complex chemical reactions such as polymerization and catalysis to form a lubricating fluid composed of large molecules. Synthetic engine oil is manufactured through chemical processes by humans. Depending on the intended use, the composition of synthetic engine oil can be adjusted. The development of synthetic engine oil began in the 1930s. At that time, due to the harsh operating conditions of aircraft engine oils, there was a demand for higher-performance lubricants, prompting some chemical plants to start developing and producing synthetic engine oils. With the rapid advancement of modern chemical technology, the performance of synthetic engine oils has significantly improved since the 1990s. Synthetic engine oil offers superior quality, and its use results in noticeable improvements in the following areas: smoother cold starts, especially in northeastern regions; better fuel efficiency; longer oil change intervals, typically 1.5 times or more compared to conventional lubricants; extended engine lifespan and reduced maintenance frequency; and cleaner engine cylinders due to the superior detergency of synthetic engine oil.

Is It Normal for Full Synthetic Engine Oil to Have a Pungent Smell?

Full synthetic engine oil having a pungent smell is not normal. Full synthetic engine oil is blended from fully synthetic base oils and additives. Generally, genuine engine oil will have a slight aromatic smell and should not have an overly pungent odor. However, counterfeit engine oil often contains more complex additives and may even have a smell similar to gasoline or diesel. You can rub it between your fingers to warm it up and then smell it more clearly to identify the odor. There are two methods to identify full synthetic engine oil: checking if it is labeled as containing PAO and ester-based oils, and seeing if the word 'full' is mentioned before 'synthetic oil'. Check if it is labeled as containing PAO and ester-based oils: Only products made from PAO and ester-based oils without blending in Group I, II, or III base oils qualify as full synthetic engine oil. Check if the word 'full' is mentioned before 'synthetic oil': If the oil is PAO-based or ester-based, it will definitely be labeled as full synthetic engine oil. To achieve better lubrication effects, humans have chemically synthesized various engine oils based on base oils, resulting in chemically synthesized engine oils. Synthetic oil manufacturers produce different types of engine oils based on user requirements, adjusting various components according to their intended use.

Can You Make a U-Turn at a Green Light for Straight Traffic?

Whether you can make a U-turn at a green light for straight traffic depends on whether the traffic signal has a left-turn indicator. If there is a left-turn indicator and it is red, making a U-turn is not allowed and would be considered a traffic violation. If there is no left-turn indicator and only a circular green light without an arrow for straight traffic, a U-turn is permitted. Scenarios where U-turns are prohibited include: U-turns are prohibited where there is a 'No U-Turn' or 'No Left Turn' sign: If there is a 'No U-Turn' sign, U-turns are not allowed at that intersection. Since a U-turn is an extension of a left turn, if there is a 'No Left Turn' sign at an intersection, U-turns are also prohibited there. U-turns are prohibited at crosswalks: U-turns are not allowed at crosswalks. If U-turns are permitted at an intersection, you must cross the crosswalk before making the U-turn; you cannot make the U-turn while on the crosswalk. U-turns are prohibited when there is no left-turn lane: Even in the leftmost lane, if there is no sign permitting left turns, U-turns are not allowed. U-turns are prohibited in the second left-turn lane: When a vehicle is in the second left-turn lane, it cannot make a U-turn. In the absence of any signs, U-turns are only permitted in the innermost left-turn lane. U-turns are prohibited at solid yellow lines: U-turns are not allowed at solid yellow lines. Even if there is a sign permitting U-turns, you must wait for the green light and cross the stop line before making the U-turn. U-turns are prohibited on highways: Crossing the central divider to make a U-turn on a highway is illegal and will result in a fine and 12 penalty points. If you miss an exit on the highway, continue to the next exit and leave the highway; never attempt an illegal U-turn.

Will a panoramic sunroof leak?

If used improperly, a panoramic sunroof may develop leaks, so it's essential for car owners to maintain it properly during daily driving. Applying window film: Falling objects from above can damage the panoramic sunroof. It is recommended to apply film to the sunroof so that even if the sunroof is damaged, the glass won't shatter and injure passengers. Cleaning the sealing strip: When the vehicle is parked for an extended period, talcum powder can be used to thoroughly clean the sunroof once to prevent natural aging of the rubber seal, which could shorten the sunroof's lifespan. For regular use, the sealing strip should be cleaned with a damp sponge every quarter. Timely cleaning of the tracks: Most sunroofs are track-based. After about six months of use, dust and sand particles can accumulate in the contact surfaces and gaps of the tracks. It's advisable to clean the tracks with a cotton cloth and apply a small amount of lubricating oil afterward. Avoid opening on bumpy roads: For electric sunroofs, it's best not to open them fully when driving on bumpy roads. Fully opening the sunroof may cause excessive vibration, leading to deformation of parts between the sunroof and the tracks or even damaging the motor.

Will the car door get scratched if bumped?

If the car door is bumped with moderate force, it usually won't get scratched. If the paint does come off, it might be due to previous impacts or poor primer treatment on the door. For severe paint damage, repainting is recommended, while minor scratches can be touched up with spot painting. Car doors provide access for drivers and passengers while isolating external disturbances. They also offer some protection against side impacts. The appearance of a car is partly determined by door design. The quality of car doors is mainly reflected in their anti-collision performance, sealing capability, and ease of opening/closing. Anti-collision performance is particularly important because during side impacts, the buffer distance is very short, making occupants vulnerable to injury.
