What Does Burnout Mean?

Burnout refers to a maneuver performed in rear-wheel-drive vehicles where the driver simultaneously presses the brake and accelerator, causing the rear tires to spin freely and rub against the ground. This friction generates large amounts of white smoke (unofficially, it can also describe the process of new cars breaking in their tires by driving them on the road). Burnouts are commonly used in racing or sports cars to achieve maximum acceleration at the start. When the brake is released, the car launches at extremely high speed.
