What does AGM mean in car batteries?

AGM car battery is a valve-regulated sealed battery that uses glass fiber separators. Car battery, also known as storage battery, works by converting chemical energy into electrical energy. The maintenance methods for car batteries are: 1. Avoid parking the car in open-air parking lots for a long time to prevent the battery from freezing and damage; 2. The car engine is difficult to start in winter, and the starting time should not exceed 5 seconds each time, with an interval of no less than 15 seconds before restarting; 3. Start the car periodically to charge the battery; 4. Clean the battery terminals regularly and apply special grease to protect the wiring; 5. Do not use car electrical appliances after the engine is turned off.
After running my repair shop for so many years, I've seen plenty of AGM batteries. The full name is 'Absorbent Glass Mat Battery' - sounds complicated, right? Simply put, it's packed with absorbent glass fibers, storing electrolyte like a water-soaked sponge in the separator. While regular batteries have free-flowing liquid electrolyte, the liquid in AGM batteries barely moves, making them extremely vibration-resistant. Many cars with start-stop systems constantly shut down and restart at traffic lights - ordinary batteries would die quickly, but AGM batteries can handle repeated discharges. They also maintain charge better when listening to music with the engine off, and last significantly longer than conventional batteries. When replacing, look for the AGM label - though pricier, they're worth every penny.
