What Causes Water Accumulation Under the Driver's Side Floor Mat?

Water accumulation under the driver's side floor mat can be caused by sunroof leaks, residual water from car washing, or leaks from the heater core. Sunroof Leaks: Blocked drainage holes or deteriorated sealing strips in the sunroof can allow water to enter the cabin. Most vehicles have sunroof drainage holes at the four corners of the sunroof, which can be located by opening the sunroof. These can be cleared using a syringe or compressed air. The sunroof sealing strips, made of rubber, may degrade over time and require replacement to resolve the issue. Residual Water from Car Washing: Negligence during car washing can lead to water entering the cabin, which, if not promptly removed, results in water accumulation. The solution involves removing the soaked carpet or floor mat, opening the sealing plugs under the chassis to quickly drain the water. However, since interior materials like floor coverings are highly absorbent, they should be removed and placed in a ventilated area to facilitate evaporation. Parking the vehicle outside to dry or setting the air circulation to internal recirculation can help expel moisture from the cabin through the air conditioning system. Heater Core Leaks: The heater core is located behind the dashboard inside the cabin, enclosed by the dashboard. If the heater core becomes clogged or corroded, it may leak, causing water to accumulate under the driver's floor mat. It is advisable to have the heater core inspected at a repair facility and replaced if necessary.
