What causes the water temperature warning light on the dashboard?

The water temperature warning light on the dashboard indicates that the coolant level is too low or the temperature is too high. The water temperature indicator light displays the working status of the engine. In some car models, the color of the indicator light shows the coolant temperature: blue indicates low water temperature; red indicates high water temperature; and no light means the water temperature is normal. The water temperature indicator light will flash when the coolant level is insufficient or the temperature is too high. After adding coolant, continue to observe. If the warning light remains on, check whether the water temperature sensor is faulty. In this case, you need to go to a 4S shop for repair. If you encounter high water temperature while driving, first slow down and park the car in a safe location. Do not turn off the engine when parking; keep the engine running. If you turn it off immediately, the engine will lose lubrication, causing severe wear and even boiling over.
I've been driving for several years and have encountered the coolant temperature warning quite a few times. The most common issue is insufficient coolant—sometimes the radiator cap is loose, or the hoses have aged and developed leaks. Another reason could be a faulty cooling fan; if the fan isn't spinning, the engine can't dissipate heat, leading to overheating. It might also be a stuck thermostat, which disrupts coolant circulation. A failing water pump can cause overheating too, as the coolant won't flow properly. Additionally, a clogged radiator due to excessive dust or mud buildup can be the culprit. Once, I ignored the warning, and the engine overheated, damaging the pistons—costing me over ten thousand yuan in repairs. If the warning light comes on, pull over immediately, turn off the engine, and wait for it to cool before checking the coolant level. If it's low, top it up with the appropriate coolant; otherwise, call for a tow truck. Regular maintenance, including changing the coolant every two years, prevents degradation and blockages. Safe driving is always the top priority.
