What Causes the Squeaking Sound When Turning the Steering Wheel?
1 Answers
The reasons for a squeaking sound when turning the steering wheel include: lack of lubrication in the steering column, low power steering fluid, universal joint failure, aging rubber bushings in the suspension stabilizer bar links, or faulty wheel bearings. If the sound originates from inside the steering wheel, it may be due to an issue with the clock spring (spiral cable). Applying some grease to the clock spring after removing the steering wheel might help; if the noise persists, replacing the clock spring is necessary. The steering wheel is a wheel-shaped device used to control the direction of vehicles such as cars, ships, and airplanes. Its function is to convert the force applied by the driver on the steering wheel's edge into torque, which is then transmitted to the steering shaft. It mainly consists of a frame, foam, and mounting clips or screw holes corresponding to the driver's airbag (DAB).
