What Causes the Noise When Braking a Car?

Reasons for noise when braking a car: 1. Just after a cold start, there is a screeching sound when braking while starting to move. This often occurs in the morning, especially in winter mornings, when there is moisture on the brake discs, making the sound particularly noticeable when starting to drive; 2. Noise during braking may be caused by small stones entering the hollow parts of the brake disc, producing a regular knocking sound when the vehicle is in motion. Removing the small stones or foreign objects will resolve the issue; 3. A metallic grinding sound when braking is mainly due to the brake pads wearing down to the safety line. This is a problem easily overlooked by most drivers. Initially, the sound is very faint, but as it gradually becomes louder, the brake pads will wear out completely, and eventually, the braking function will rely solely on the metal of the brake pads and the brake disc. At this point, the brake pads and brake disc need to be replaced; 4. A clicking sound when braking is mostly due to the ABS system engaging when the driver applies the brakes sharply at high speed, preventing accidents caused by locking the brakes.
My car has been driven for several years, and it's quite common to hear noises when braking, mostly because the brake pads have worn thin, causing a squeaking sound when rubbing against the disc. On rainy days or during winter starts, rust or ice on the brake discs can also produce similar creaking noises, which usually go away after driving for a while. If there's a sudden sharp screeching sound, it might be due to small stones or debris stuck between the brake pads. Newly replaced brake pads may produce a breaking-in sound for the first few hundred kilometers, which is normal. However, if the noise persists or is accompanied by insufficient braking force, it's crucial to have the brake system checked immediately to avoid compromising driving safety. I make it a habit to have the brake thickness inspected by a professional shop every six months, which saves a lot of trouble. Before long trips, I also clean the dust off the wheels myself as a simple precaution.
