Fault in the alternator and voltage regulator: such as the contacts of the voltage regulator being burnt, oxidized, or poorly connected; or the diodes of the alternator being short-circuited or failing. If this is the case, it must be resolved as soon as possible to prevent the generator from continuing to operate for extended periods, which could damage other diodes and the stator windings of the alternator.
