What Causes the BMW 530 Fan to Keep Running?
2 Answers
1. Excessive Transmission Oil Temperature: Check the transmission oil temperature upon startup; it is only 40-50°C, yet the fan continues to run at high speed. This rules out excessive transmission oil temperature as the cause. 2. Excessive Air Conditioning Pressure: Upon engine startup, the control unit shows the coolant temperature at only 60°C, yet the fan still runs at high speed. This also rules out excessive coolant temperature as the cause. 3. Excessive Coolant Temperature: When checking the air conditioning pressure reading, the air conditioning system is not yet activated, but the pressure displays 27 Bar. The fan typically runs at high speed when the air conditioning pressure reaches 20-24 Bar, suggesting that the high-speed fan operation is due to excessive air conditioning pressure. Additional relevant information: Further investigation is needed to confirm whether the air conditioning pressure is indeed excessive. Directly connecting an air conditioning refrigerant charging machine to check the actual pressure in the system reveals a high pressure of only 12-14 Bar and a low pressure of 2 Bar, indicating normal pressure levels.
My BMW 530's fan kept running non-stop, which really worried me. I thought the air conditioning was broken, but even after turning it off, the fan kept spinning. I checked carefully and found that the coolant was at the right level, and the radiator was fine. Later, I consulted an experienced mechanic who said it might be a faulty coolant temperature sensor. The computer misjudged the engine as overheating, forcing the fan to keep cooling. Other possible causes include electrical circuit shorts or a stuck relay. A constantly running fan not only drains the battery but also accelerates component wear. If the engine actually overheats, it could be disastrous. So, I immediately went to the repair shop and replaced the sensor, which solved the problem. Daily driving requires paying attention to the temperature gauge—addressing issues early is the best way to stay worry-free.
