What Causes Abnormal Noises in the Car Steering System?

Abnormal noises during steering can be caused by various issues, such as a faulty clock spring inside the steering wheel, aging or excessive play in the steering tie rod ball joint, leaking dust boots on the steering gear, improper tension or aging of the power steering belt, or contaminated power steering fluid. Solutions are as follows: 1. If the noise comes from inside the steering wheel while turning, it is likely due to interference from the clock spring. Remove the steering wheel and apply grease to the clock spring. If the noise persists, replace the clock spring. 2. If the noise comes from outside the vehicle while turning, it may be caused by insufficient lubrication in the strut mount bearings. Open the hood and check if the noise originates from the strut mount area. If confirmed, apply grease to the bearings. If the noise remains, replacement is necessary. 3. If the noise is not from the strut mount bearings, inspect the stabilizer bar bushings for looseness or damage. Loose or damaged bushings can cause noise during steering and when driving on uneven roads. Tightening with shims may resolve looseness, but damaged bushings must be replaced.
I remember there was a creaking sound when turning the steering wheel before. At first, I thought it was due to improper steering wheel adjustment, but after a check at the shop, it turned out to be wear and looseness in the steering tie rod ball joint. The metal grinding noise was particularly noticeable while driving. Prolonged driving on rough roads can easily cause wear in these steering system components, leading to imprecise steering and potential safety hazards. The power steering pump might also lack oil or have a loose belt, producing a hissing sound, especially more common in cold weather. My neighbor's car had this issue before, and it was fixed after replacing the pump. Regular inspections of the chassis and steering system are recommended, ensuring the power steering fluid is topped up to prevent steering wheel stiffness at high speeds. Don’t ignore unusual noises—seek professional inspection immediately, as steering is critical to safe driving. DIY fixes are too risky, and replacing parts usually costs a few hundred yuan.
