What causes a car to start but not shift gears?

It is likely an issue with the clutch. Below are the reasons why a manual transmission suddenly cannot shift into any gear: 1. P-gear lock solenoid failure: For safety reasons, to prevent the vehicle from accidentally shifting into other gears when starting, there is this P-gear solenoid. This solenoid needs to receive a signal from the brake pedal to release. Therefore, these two components are interrelated. If either one fails, it will prevent the gear lever from being pushed out of P-gear and shifting into other gears. 2. Internal failure of the gear lever assembly: The gears inside the gear lever wear out, causing the gear lever to get stuck, making it difficult to push or pull, resulting in the inability to shift gears or difficulty in shifting. 3. Incomplete clutch disengagement: This may be caused by a failure of the clutch disc or clutch pressure plate. Generally, this requires replacing the clutch three-piece set (friction disc, pressure plate, and release bearing). 4. Transmission oil contamination: Affects the gear shifting of manual transmission cars.
