What are the types of automatic transmissions?

There are three types of automatic transmissions: dual-clutch transmission (DCT), continuously variable transmission (CVT), and automatic transmission (AT). An automatic transmission does not require the driver to manually shift gears, as the computer controls the gear shifting. However, the structure of an automatic transmission is more complex than that of a manual transmission. The dual-clutch transmission is developed based on the manual transmission, and its structure is similar to that of a manual transmission, except it has an additional clutch and a set of gear-shifting control mechanisms. The steel belt or chain of a CVT transmission can move on the pulleys, enabling variable speed and torque. The AT transmission is a relatively complex automatic transmission, also known as a torque converter transmission. It connects to the engine via a torque converter and relies on planetary gears for speed and torque variation.
