What are the signs that the throttle body needs cleaning?

There are two situations that require throttle body cleaning. One is routine maintenance when the engine idles roughly or has poor acceleration. The other is after repair involving power disconnection, where throttle cleaning is needed to remap the learned values. Below are precautions for throttle body cleaning: Do not arbitrarily move the valve plate: Especially when power is not disconnected. If working alone, power must be disconnected before moving the valve. For two-person operation, one person should turn the ignition to ON and press the accelerator inside the car while the other cleans the throttle body in the engine compartment. Throttle cleaning requires remapping learned values: For simple throttle cleaning, two-person operation is recommended. Some vehicle models may have their navigation systems locked after battery disconnection, requiring initialization and password re-entry for reactivation.
After decades of driving, I've noticed several telltale signs of a dirty throttle body. First is unstable idling - at red lights, the car shakes like an earthquake, the tachometer needle jumps erratically, making the ride uncomfortable. Second is sluggish acceleration - you stomp on the gas but the car responds lethargically, making hill climbs or overtaking painfully difficult. Fuel consumption also increases noticeably - where a full tank used to last 500km, now it's done at 400km because carbon buildup restricts airflow, forcing the engine to guzzle more fuel. Hard starting becomes common too, especially in cold weather when it takes multiple attempts to fire up - heartbreaking to hear. If left uncleaned, accumulating carbon deposits may cause erratic RPM fluctuations while driving, dramatically increasing danger levels. My advice? At the first symptom, get it cleaned immediately - don't wait until the engine needs major repairs.
