What are the reasons why the Audi A4 cannot engage gears?

Audi A4 cannot engage gears due to reasons such as a dead battery, incorrect gear position, or lack of antifreeze. Dead battery: This may be caused by leaving the headlights on for an extended period or the battery reaching the end of its lifespan. It is generally recommended to replace the battery every 2 years. Additionally, installing xenon headlights, high-power audio systems, or DVD players can also lead to vehicle circuit malfunctions. Incorrect gear position: When starting an automatic transmission vehicle, the gear must be in the P (Park) or N (Neutral) position. If it is in R (Reverse) or D (Drive), the car will not start. Similarly, some manual transmission vehicles will not start if the clutch is not depressed. Lack of antifreeze: Adding water or using low-quality antifreeze can cause the entire cooling system to freeze in extremely cold winter conditions, leading to engine block cracks. This results in the car's water pump failing to operate, preventing the engine from starting and potentially damaging other engine components.
Last time I drove my Audi A4, I also encountered the issue of not being able to shift gears. After struggling for a while, I found out that the lock button under the gear lever was stuck. Audi's design requires you to press the brake pedal to shift out of P gear, so first check if the brake lights are working. If the brake switch is faulty, the system will lock the gear to protect the transmission. Also, inspect the area around the gear lever for coins or candy wrappers, as foreign objects can cause malfunction. If you occasionally can't shift when the car is cold, it might be due to dirty transmission fluid clogging the valve body. Another hidden issue—low battery voltage can cause the electronic shift module to fail, especially in older cars. Lastly, the transmission control unit might have crashed and needs reprogramming. In any case, don't force the gear lever—call a tow truck immediately.
