What are the pros and cons of installing a differential lock?
1 Answers
The advantage of installing a differential lock is that it allows all wheels of the vehicle to receive effective power in off-road conditions, helping to escape difficult situations; the disadvantage is that it must be engaged while the vehicle is stationary. Function of differential lock: Manual mechanical differential locks are technically simple and low-cost to produce, yet they remain the most reliable and effective equipment for enhancing a vehicle's off-road performance in the drivetrain system. They enable a complete mechanical connection between the two half-shafts, providing strong durability. However, differential locks should only be used in extreme off-road conditions or emergencies, as using them during normal driving can cause severe damage to components like tires. Precautions for installing a differential lock: Except for fully automatic limited-slip differentials or differential locks, others require drilling holes in the original rear axle housing to connect control lines or pipes to the exterior. Even factory-original models will have this additional hole.
