What are the penalties for running a right-turn red light?

Since the enactment of the new traffic law in 2016, traffic regulations have become very strict. The new regulations stipulate that running a red light, which was previously penalized with a 200 yuan fine and 3 demerit points, was changed to a 200 yuan fine and 6 demerit points starting from January 1, 2016. In many places, being caught by electronic surveillance only results in a 200 yuan fine without deducting points. Although running a yellow light is not penalized, it is still advisable to avoid doing so. In the absence of specific traffic instructions, motor vehicles can make a right turn at a red light without it being considered a violation. However, at intersections with 'No Right Turn' traffic signs, vehicles must stop when the light is red. Making a right turn in such cases is equivalent to running a red light, which incurs a penalty of 6 demerit points and a fine ranging from 100 to 200 yuan for violating traffic signal rules.
