What are the main components of a braking system?

Braking systems consist of two main components: the brake actuation mechanism and the brake assembly. The brake actuation mechanism generates braking action, controls braking effectiveness, and transmits braking energy to various components of the braking system. The brake assembly produces the force that resists vehicle motion or the tendency of motion. Brakes are components that generate forces (braking forces) opposing vehicle movement or its tendency to move. Commonly used automotive brakes utilize friction between stationary and rotating components to generate braking torque, known as friction brakes, which come in two structural types: drum brakes and disc brakes.
