Shandong's regional license plate letter codes are: Lu A for Jinan, Lu B for Qingdao, Lu C for Zibo, Lu D for Zaozhuang, Lu E for Dongying, Lu F for Yantai, Lu G for Weifang, Lu H for Jining, Lu J for Tai'an, Lu K for Weihai, Lu L for Rizhao, Lu M for Binzhou, Lu N for Dezhou, Lu P for Liaocheng, Lu Q for Linyi, Lu R for Heze, Lu S for Laiwu, Lu U for Qingdao, Lu Y for Yantai. The first character of a license plate is a Chinese character representing the provincial-level administrative region where the vehicle is registered, which is the abbreviation of provinces, municipalities directly under the central government, and autonomous regions. The second character is an English letter representing the prefecture-level administrative region where the vehicle is registered, serving as the letter code for various prefecture-level cities, regions, autonomous prefectures, and leagues.

As a frequent driver from Shandong, I'm familiar with the license plate letter distribution. Jinan uses A as the provincial capital. Qingdao is B, a major port city. Zibo is C, a traditional industrial center. Zaozhuang D, Dongying E is famous for its oil fields. Yantai F is a coastal tourist hotspot. Weifang G is the hometown of kites. Jining H is Confucius' birthplace. Tai'an J has Mount Tai within its borders. Weihai K is a seaside resort. Rizhao L is an emerging city. Binzhou M, Dezhou N, Liaocheng P, Linyi Q, and Heze R each have their unique characteristics. Laiwu previously used S but now belongs to Jinan using A. Memorizing these letters helps identify vehicle origins on highways and is practical for avoiding license plate confusion, especially during long-distance navigation when recognizing plates gives a general sense of direction. The province-wide unified system reduces travel inconveniences.

I drive heavy trucks all over the province, and the license plate letters of Shandong are easy to remember. Jinan A is the capital, Qingdao B is the largest port, Zibo C is the old industrial area, Zaozhuang D, Dongying E is the oilfield area. Yantai F is common with fishing vehicles by the sea, Weifang G has lively traffic during the kite festival. Jining H has a rich history, Tai'an J has many tourist vehicles. Weihai K and Rizhao L have quite a few coastal vehicles, Binzhou M, Dezhou N, Liaocheng P, Linyi Q, Heze R—just memorize them in alphabetical order. Laiwu now uses A and is no longer separate. The first letter of the license plate is the city code, and it’s super convenient to use a mobile app to check maps along with the license plates while driving. For example, when you see a G license plate at a service area, you know it’s a Weifang vehicle, and it’s nice to chat during rest stops.

I just started learning to drive, and the license plate letters for various cities in Shandong are: Jinan A, Qingdao B, Zibo C, Zaozhuang D, Dongying E, Yantai F, Weifang G, Jining H, Tai'an J, Weihai K, Rizhao L, Binzhou M, Dezhou N, Liaocheng P, Linyi Q, Heze R. Currently, Laiwu uses the same A as Jinan. These letters help identify which city a vehicle is from. When I first started, I wrote them down in a notebook and memorized them one by one. Now, as soon as I see the first letter of a license plate, I know its location. Before heading out, I check the destination city code—for example, if I'm going to Yantai, I look for F-plate cars as a reference. This gives me much more peace of mind and reduces the chances of getting lost.
