What are the functions of the rearview mirror buttons in Volkswagen cars?

The switch button on the interior rearview mirror of Volkswagen cars controls the anti-glare function of the rearview mirror. The anti-glare rearview mirror consists of a special mirror, two photodiodes, and an electronic controller. The electronic controller receives signals of front and rear light from the photodiodes and is installed below the front windshield of the vehicle. If light shines on the interior rearview mirror, and the light from the rear is stronger than that from the front, the electronic controller will output a voltage to the conductive layer. This voltage changes the color of the electrochromic layer on the mirror. The higher the voltage, the darker the color of the electrochromic layer. At this point, even if strong light shines on the rearview mirror, the light reflected to the driver's eyes by the anti-glare rearview mirror will appear dim, preventing glare. The electrochromic layer continuously adjusts based on the intensity of the incoming light from the rear to prevent glare. When the vehicle is in reverse, the anti-glare function of the interior rearview mirror is deactivated, and the right exterior rearview mirror automatically tilts downward to illuminate the ground. Although the automatic anti-glare rearview mirror can prevent glare, when reversing out of a garage, the light at the rear of the vehicle may be stronger than that at the front. In this case, if the rearview mirror darkens, it may hinder the driver's ability to see clearly while reversing. Therefore, some cars are designed to automatically deactivate the anti-glare function when the car is shifted into reverse gear, or the function can be manually canceled using the switch.
