What are the engine layout methods?

Engine layout methods include: front-engine, mid-engine, and rear-engine. Front-engine layouts can be further divided into longitudinal and transverse configurations. Cars with longitudinal engines are generally rear-wheel drive, while those with transverse engines are typically front-wheel drive. Mid-engine and rear-engine layouts are commonly used in sports cars, most of which are either four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. Rear-wheel-drive sports cars tend to be faster. Rear-engine layouts are usually found in some family sedans, where most of the car's weight is concentrated on the front. This type of car has poor handling—if the front is too heavy, the car will experience understeer during fast cornering; if the rear is too heavy, it will exhibit oversteer during fast cornering.
