The dimensions of a motorcycle's three boxes are approximately: length around 1.8-2.0 meters, width around 70-80 centimeters, and height around 1.1-1.2 meters. Pre-departure checks: Inspect the motorcycle's condition, ensuring that the headlights, turn signals, horn, handlebars, etc., are functioning properly. Attire and protective gear: Helmets are legally required protective gear; choose brightly colored clothing. Traffic rules compliance: Avoid racing with cars, drive safely according to traffic laws, and yield to pedestrians. Do not follow too closely; maintain an appropriate distance behind the right rear corner of the vehicle in front. When overtaking, pass from the left side of the vehicle ahead; avoid overtaking from the right or between two parallel vehicles.

I've been into motorcycle touring for five years, and there's really no fixed standard for the size of three boxes. The width of the side cases is generally between 30-50 cm, with a depth of around 40 cm. The top case is slightly narrower, but the height can reach up to 60 cm. For example, I installed aluminum three boxes, with the side cases being 45 cm wide, just right not to exceed the handlebar width, making it easier to navigate narrow roads without scraping walls. Actually, capacity is more important. When I modified them, I prioritized the volume: each side case should start at 30 liters, and the top case should be at least 40 liters to fit a full-face helmet. If you choose plastic boxes, you need to pay even more attention to the size. If they're too wide, they might wobble when cornering, so it's recommended to measure the seat width accurately and add a 5 cm margin.

Last time when helping a fellow rider install panniers, I realized that dimensions must be considered in conjunction with the bike model. For street bikes installing panniers, the width of the side cases shouldn't exceed 65cm, otherwise they might scrape your knees when cornering. Adventure bikes can go up to 70cm in width, but the height shouldn't surpass the handguards to avoid rearview obstruction. Specific dimensions vary by brand - for example, the GSA DV top case standard 42L size is 46×50×34cm (L×W×H), while SW-Motech's small side cases measure 38×33×39cm. I recommend bringing a tape measure to the store for test fitting. After installation, also check the ground clearance - it shouldn't be less than 15cm when fully loaded.

Choose the size of the three boxes based on their purpose. For commuting, a compact size is recommended: side boxes should be no wider than 35 cm, with a depth of 30 cm, and the top box should be under 50 cm in height, with a total volume of 70 liters being sufficient. For long-distance motorcycle tours, larger sizes are needed. For my trip to Tibet, I equipped 45-liter side boxes (52×40×32 cm) paired with a 58-liter top box, which could fit everything including tents and sleeping bags. For racing models, the setup is more compact, such as metal three boxes with a width reduced to 40 cm. Before modifying the boxes, check local regulations first, as some provinces limit the total width of the three boxes to no more than 10 cm beyond the handlebars. Aluminum boxes are 3 cm thinner than plastic ones, saving more space.
