BMW M5 Competition differs from the standard version in terms of exterior design and powertrain. Exterior design: For the exterior, the Competition version features blackened treatments on multiple areas including the double kidney grille, exterior mirror caps, and rear spoiler, along with exclusive "Competition" badges to showcase its special identity. On the sides and rear, the new car builds upon the 5 Series foundation, further enhancing its sporty attributes with additions such as a sport exhaust system, custom 20-inch forged lightweight wheels, and air deflectors on the front fenders. Powertrain: The Competition version is equipped with a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine, which has been comprehensively upgraded to deliver an output of 460kW (625PS). The Competition version adds 26 horsepower compared to the standard version, achieving a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of just 3.3 seconds.

I just drove the M5 Competition, and the difference from the regular version is quite noticeable. The Competition's engine tuning is more aggressive, with power increased to 625 horsepower, 25 more than the standard model, and acceleration is 0.1 seconds quicker. The throttle response is also much sharper. The exterior looks more aggressive, with details like the black grille and carbon fiber mirrors catching the eye, and the exhaust note is tuned to be deeper. The suspension is significantly stiffer—while the regular version handles speed bumps relatively smoothly, the Competition version jolted my back, but it's incredibly stable during high-speed cornering. The interior features some exclusive badges, with embroidered seats and carbon fiber trim adding a premium touch. Overall, the Competition version is better suited for the track, while the regular version is more ideal for daily commuting.

The Thunder Edition pays more attention to details. For example, it comes standard with 20-inch lightweight alloy wheels, which are lighter and stronger than the 19-inch wheels on the regular version, paired with high-performance tires for significantly improved grip. The carbon fiber roof reduces weight, benefiting handling balance. Although the power output is only 25 horsepower higher, the transmission programming has been optimized for quicker and sharper shifts. The exhaust system has been redesigned, delivering a more aggressive roar in Sport mode—a single throttle press can shake a tunnel. It costs about 100,000 RMB more in terms of configuration but adds M Sport seats and an Alcantara steering wheel with an exceptional feel. The regular version is practical enough, but the Thunder Edition is better suited for enthusiasts chasing ultimate performance.

In terms of performance, the Thunder Edition stands out with its reinforced crankshaft and turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 engine delivering 625 horsepower, achieving a 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 3.3 seconds, which is 0.1 seconds faster than the standard version. The chassis is tuned for track performance, featuring 30% stiffer springs and reinforced anti-roll bars for better cornering control with reduced body roll. The exterior boasts a black high-gloss package, with fully blacked-out grille and window frames, along with more aggressive wheel designs. Weight is reduced by approximately 50 kilograms, primarily through the use of a carbon fiber roof and lightweight battery. While the standard version prioritizes comfort, the Thunder Edition is purely designed for driving pleasure.
