Driving is not allowed during the temporary suspension of a driving license. If a driver operates a motor vehicle while their driving license is temporarily suspended, it is considered as driving without a license, which is a very serious offense. According to Article 99 of the Road Traffic Safety Law: The public security traffic management department shall impose penalties and fines for any of the following acts: 1. Driving a motor vehicle without obtaining a motor vehicle driving license, or driving during the period when the motor vehicle driving license is revoked or temporarily suspended; 2. Allowing a person without a motor vehicle driving license or whose license has been revoked or temporarily suspended to drive a motor vehicle; fleeing the scene after causing a traffic accident, which does not constitute a crime; 3. Driving a motor vehicle at a speed exceeding 50% of the prescribed limit; 4. Forcing a motor vehicle driver to violate road traffic safety laws, regulations, and safe driving requirements, resulting in a traffic accident that does not constitute a crime; 5. Forcibly passing through traffic control areas despite dissuasion; 6. Intentionally damaging, moving, or altering traffic facilities, causing harmful consequences that do not constitute a crime; 7. Illegally intercepting or detaining motor vehicles despite dissuasion, causing severe traffic congestion or significant property loss.
Driving with a temporarily confiscated vehicle license is no joke. As an ordinary car owner, I remember a friend who secretly drove his car after his license was confiscated, only to be caught by traffic police. He was fined 2,000 yuan, had 12 points deducted from his driver's license, and his car was impounded. Later, when he had a minor accident, the insurance company refused to cover the damages, forcing him to pay out of pocket for repairs, which cost him even more. The worst part was the stress and inconvenience it caused. Typically, a vehicle license is temporarily confiscated due to illegal parking or annual inspection issues, meaning the car is already in an illegal state. Driving it increases the risk of accidents and could even lead to detention. My advice is not to take the risk—use public transport or ride-hailing services instead, as it’s both safe and compliant. Wait until you retrieve your license to avoid making things worse.
