The characteristics of front-wheel drive include: 1. Eliminating the need for a driveshaft allows the combination of the transmission, clutch, and main reducer of the drive axle, reducing the number of components in the drivetrain and saving space; 2. The engine and drivetrain are located at the front of the vehicle, shifting the center of gravity forward during braking, making the front wheels less prone to locking during emergency braking; 3. The front seats offer better comfort than the rear seats; 4. The front wheels serve as both the driving and steering wheels, making it easier to control the direction during turns and reducing the likelihood of oversteering, thereby enhancing steering safety; 5. The absence of a driveshaft results in a flatter floor inside the car, creating a more spacious interior.
After driving for so many years, I think the biggest advantage of front-wheel drive is its convenience and cost-effectiveness. During my daily commute, I clearly feel that the steering wheel is lighter with a front-wheel-drive car, making turns and parking in the city much easier compared to rear-wheel-drive cars, which are more prone to skidding. With the engine and transmission located at the front, it eliminates the need for a driveshaft and related components, resulting in a nearly flat rear floor. When I take my kids out, they can stretch their legs comfortably in the back seat. However, when fully loaded and climbing steep hills, the front end tends to feel heavy, and with high horsepower, it's easier to experience understeer when cornering on mountain roads, so I have to drive more carefully. On wet and slippery roads, the traction is actually better than rear-wheel drive, and with snow tires, it remains stable even in snowy conditions. For ordinary families like ours, it’s really practical.
