Under What Circumstances Is a Right Turn Prohibited?

There are two situations where right turns are prohibited at traffic light intersections: first, motor vehicles cannot make a right turn at intersections where right turns are explicitly banned; second, right turns are also prohibited when the traffic signal is red. When making a right turn, vehicles must be in the right-turn lane. If a vehicle attempts to turn right from a straight or left-turn lane, traffic authorities will penalize the driver for running a red light. Therefore, if you intend to turn right, the vehicle must change lanes in advance. Otherwise, attempting to switch lanes when the light is red may lead to crossing solid lines, which is a traffic violation and can cause congestion. One prerequisite for making a right turn is that it must not interfere with vehicles proceeding normally, and pedestrians on crosswalks must be given the right of way. Legal Regulations: According to the "Road Traffic Safety Law," the provisions regarding traffic signals are as follows: Article 25, Paragraph 2: Traffic signals include traffic lights, traffic signs, road markings, and the directions of traffic police officers. Article 26: Traffic signals consist of red, green, and yellow lights. A red light indicates prohibition of passage, a green light permits passage, and a yellow light serves as a warning. Article 38: Vehicles and pedestrians must follow traffic signals. If a traffic police officer is directing traffic on-site, their instructions take precedence. On roads without traffic signals, passage must adhere to the principles of safety and smooth traffic flow. Article 62: Pedestrians must use crosswalks or pedestrian overpasses when crossing intersections or roads. At signalized crosswalks, pedestrians must obey the traffic signals. At intersections without signals or crosswalks, or when crossing roads without overpasses, pedestrians must ensure safety before proceeding. Article 89: Pedestrians, passengers, and non-motorized vehicle drivers who violate road traffic laws and regulations regarding passage will receive a warning or a fine ranging from 5 to 50 yuan. Non-motorized vehicle drivers who refuse to pay the fine may have their vehicles impounded. Motor vehicle drivers who violate traffic signal rules will be penalized with 6 demerit points. Right-Turn Precautions: Observe oncoming straight-moving vehicles: When turning right, check both the right and left sides for approaching vehicles. Watch for opposing left-turning vehicles: In addition to straight-moving vehicles, be aware of any vehicles making left turns from the opposite direction. When turning right, yield to vehicles on the left, whether they are turning left or going straight. Be mindful of pedestrians: When making a right turn, pay attention to pedestrians on crosswalks, not only at the intersection but also at the corner where additional crosswalks may be present.
