Should You Use the Handbrake in Traffic Jams?

You should use the handbrake in traffic jams. If the traffic jam is short, you may choose to only use the foot brake depending on the situation; however, if the vehicle is turned off due to a prolonged traffic jam, it is essential to engage the handbrake. How the Handbrake Works: The handbrake, also known as the auxiliary brake, uses a steel cable connected to the rear brake shoes to apply braking force to the vehicle. Prolonged use of the handbrake can cause the steel cable to undergo plastic deformation. Since this deformation is irreversible, long-term use will reduce its effectiveness, and the handbrake's travel distance will increase. Usage Precautions: Avoid pulling the handbrake too tightly, and for automatic transmission vehicles, engage the handbrake before shifting into Park (P). When using the handbrake, do not pull it too forcefully, and especially avoid pulling it to its limit. Excessive or prolonged stretching of the metal can accelerate deformation, leading to faster degradation of the handbrake cable's braking performance. The correct method is to pull the handbrake until the rear wheels lock, then lift it 1 to 2 notches further to ensure the vehicle does not roll.
