Should You Use a Steering Wheel Cover?

Steering wheels should be covered because they can peel over time, and using a steering wheel cover prevents this. The steering wheel is the round device used to control the direction of a vehicle. It is typically connected to the steering column via splines, and its function is to convert the force applied by the driver on the wheel's edge into torque, which is then transmitted to the steering column. A larger-diameter steering wheel reduces the amount of force the driver needs to apply when turning. The steering intermediate shaft, which connects the steering gear to the steering column, helps standardize the steering gear, compensates for manufacturing and installation errors, and ensures a more rational installation of the steering gear and steering wheel in the vehicle.
Whether to use a steering wheel cover is a crucial safety issue in my opinion, especially since I often drive on highways and have seen accidents caused by steering wheel slippage due to ill-fitting covers. If the cover is too loose or made of slippery material, it can lead to an unstable grip, particularly during emergency turns, resulting in loss of control. Additionally, if the steering wheel contains an airbag, a thick cover may obstruct its proper deployment, increasing risks. I recommend prioritizing the original factory design—safe driving is what matters most. There’s no need to sacrifice safety for aesthetics. If you must use one, ensure the cover fits precisely, choose anti-slip, high-friction materials like silicone or microfiber, and regularly check its secure fit. In short, safety comes first—don’t blindly follow trends when installing a cover.
