Should You Turn Off the Engine Before Shifting to P Gear or Vice Versa?

When parking after driving, you should turn off the engine before shifting to P gear. After the engine is turned off, the vehicle may move slightly due to uneven road surfaces. If you shift to P gear first, the locking mechanism of the transmission engages with the gears, and any movement at this point can cause impact on the transmission gears. After the vehicle is parked, always shift to P gear and not to N gear. Although both N gear and P gear can be used when parking, there is a difference between the two. N gear does not have a locking mechanism, whereas P gear does. Once shifted to P gear, the vehicle will not roll even if the brake pedal is not pressed. When the gear is in N gear, the transmission's locking mechanism does not engage, and the vehicle may roll if the brake pedal is not pressed. Here are some notes on shifting gears in different situations for automatic transmission vehicles: Normal driving: There is no specific requirement for gear selection; you can drive continuously in D gear. Reversing: After pressing the brake to stop the vehicle's forward movement, shift to R gear. Gently releasing the brake will allow the vehicle to move in reverse. Waiting while parked or driving in congested traffic: You can shift to N gear. Highway driving or overtaking at high speed: You can shift to S gear. S gear is the vehicle's sport mode, allowing free gear changes like D gear. It can also be used when climbing slopes, as this gear provides maximum torque output and acceleration.
