Should You Shift Gear or Release Handbrake First When Starting the Car?

When starting the car, you should shift into gear before releasing the handbrake. This is to prevent the vehicle from rolling backward if parked on a slope. Releasing the handbrake first may cause the car to roll, but shifting into gear first and then releasing the handbrake can prevent this issue. For automatic transmission vehicles, the order doesn't matter as long as safety is ensured. The handbrake, technically known as an auxiliary brake, operates differently from the main brake system. It uses a steel cable connected to the rear brake shoes to apply braking force. Prolonged use of the handbrake can cause the steel cable to undergo plastic deformation, which is irreversible. Over time, this reduces the handbrake's effectiveness and increases its travel distance.
