Should You Press the Brake When Shifting Gears in an Automatic Transmission Car?

When shifting gears in an automatic transmission vehicle, it is not necessary to press the brake. First of all, if the vehicle is in motion, it means the gear is already in D (Drive) mode. At this point, shifting gears usually involves switching to S (Sport) or M (Manual) mode. Automatic transmission vehicles do not allow shifting to N (Neutral), P (Park), or R (Reverse) while driving. More details are as follows: 1. In an automatic transmission car, the brake pedal only needs to be pressed when shifting to P (Park) mode. For other gears, normal manual control is sufficient without the need for assistance from the right foot. This is primarily because, in P mode, there is a control lock valve that must be released by pressing the brake pedal before the gear can be shifted from P to other modes (parking gear shift). 2. When driving at high speeds, the vehicle is typically in D mode. If a gear shift is required, it is usually to N, S, or M mode. Shifting to N mode is intended to cut off the engine's power transmission. Shifting to S or M mode is mainly for acceleration purposes. In such cases, when an automatic transmission vehicle shifts from D to M (or S) at high speed, if the driver presses the brake while shifting, the vehicle's original trajectory of acceleration is disrupted. This sudden braking causes the speed to drop, resulting in the vehicle oscillating between acceleration and deceleration, which would undoubtedly lead to a very poor driving experience.
