Should You Downshift When Overtaking with a Manual Transmission?

Whether to downshift when overtaking with a manual transmission depends on the car's power and speed during the overtaking maneuver. If the speed is already high, there's no need to downshift—simply press the accelerator. However, if the RPM is low and the speed is slow, downshifting is necessary for the quickest and safest acceleration to overtake. When overtaking, it's important to observe the dynamics of the vehicle being overtaken by turning your head, choose the right moment to overtake, accelerate and merge into the adjacent lane, pass the vehicle in a straight line until a safe distance is achieved, and then merge back into the original lane. Understand your car's acceleration performance before overtaking: The driver should fully understand the car's acceleration capabilities before attempting to overtake. Ensure that the horn, turn signals, and headlights are functioning properly. Choose a straight, wide road with good visibility, no obstacles on either side, and no oncoming traffic within 150 meters ahead. Overtaking should only be done under safe conditions, avoiding reckless maneuvers regardless of subjective or objective conditions. Increase speed before overtaking: Before overtaking, increase your speed and approach the left side of the vehicle you're overtaking to reduce the distance between you. Turn on the left turn signal and honk the horn (or flash the headlights at night) to notify the vehicle ahead. Once you confirm that the vehicle ahead is yielding or signaling to yield, slightly steer to the left while maintaining a safe lateral distance from the vehicle being overtaken.
